Melbourne artist Yasmin de Laine is a new name for me but listening to her new single ‘Greensick‘, and the EP that it comes from, Each Heart Devours The Other, I’m impressed by the shadowy blend of folk, country and dreamy gothic pop that pervades her music.
The haunting, mystical aura of de Laine’s songs filter Appalachia through the Victorian bushlands, evoking a wide swathe of musical history – from Karen Dalton to PJ Harvey and Warpaint. She populates her songs with characters subjected to the anguish and madness of love, conveyed via a high, lonesome and bewitching voice.
PTW readers will recognise the pedal steel of Shane Reilly (Lost Ragas) adding some fine atmosphere and authenticity alongside de Laine’s banjo and guitar, Anita Quayle’s cello and the percussion of Roger Newall.
