Melbourne duo Hana Brenecki and guitarist Jessie-Lee Zubkevych have a new single out called ‘The Tallest of Tales‘, the second from their forthcoming new album, and we’re very happy to premiere the video clip for it today.
It’s another fantastic single from the pair, Hana’s voice possessing the perfect balance of ache, twang and crackle. She’s one part country, one part bluesy soul and it serves the song so well. Jessie-Lee’s guitar acts as a warm and shimmering six string counterpoint before embarking on an understated rock leaning solo that winds its way gloriously beneath the fine rhythm section.
The clip features the whole band plus some entertaining cameos from notable Melbourne musicians (including Dan Brodie, Pat Wilson Ben Mastwyk, Tom Brooks) throughout. Shot upstairs at The Gem Bar in Collingwood, it portrays common dating scenarios with a slight twist, from the intoxicated-on-arrival date, to the one that wants to split the bill down to the cent, to someone who looks nothing like their profile picture.
The track itself revolves around the theme of bad dates and the sense of feeling completely mismatched when trying to find meaningful connections. The lyric ‘I pretend that I’m funny, the world is a peach, but I paint my walls black and the outlook is bleak’ sums up the sentiment of the song from Hana’s perspective.
“I had this concept many years ago for the clip but didn’t think it would ever come to fruition, as trying to communicate a storyline, whilst involving many extras playing different characters is quite a huge undertaking. Every scenario portrayed is one that close friends and I have experienced in real life, and I’m sure many others will be able to relate. I had the longest list of different bad dates to include, but of course with limited time we had to narrow it down. I’m also a big fan of horror, and dark comedy, my favourite movie growing up was Beetlejuice. I just wanted to be Lydia Deetz, so I wanted to find a way to incorporate my weird humour into it as well.”
The video was shot, produced, and edited by Chris Lichti, who is no stranger to the Melbourne music scene. Lichti is a former member of Cash Savage and the Last Drinks and leads his own alt-country band Eaten by Dogs, both of whom he has made several film clips for amongst many other local bands.
“I’ve worked with Chris a couple of times on simpler concepts and knew he would take on this challenge and absolutely nail it whilst working within a very tight timeframe. After seeing his own film clip for ‘Rain won’t come’ by his band Eaten by Dogs, I also had faith that his offbeat humour would match mine.”
Though the video may seem at first like the rotating cast of dates are the problem, as the story unfolds it leaves you to question who the real bad date is.
