Winter McQuinn will be a new name to most but he’s had his hand in a number of other musical projects, including as frontman for the Melbourne band Sunfruits and drummer for Jade Imagine. On his debut solo album Move To The Trees, McQuinn immerses himself in cosmic folk-rock, where a pop sensibility meets psychedelic musicality.
In the hands of producer Jesse Williams (Leah Senior, Grace Cummings) it’s a beautifully lush sounding album – adventurous and enigmatic without losing sight of the song. From Nick Drake to The Lemon Twigs and Rose City Band, this is the kind of music that sounds open and freewheeling as it drifts and tumbles through open fields of jangly guitars, keyboards, recorders and a gently propellent rhythm section.
Songs to head for if I’ve piqued your interest include the single Red Wool’, the more gentle baroque sounds of ‘Time Passes By’ that recalls Elliott Smith and the more contemporary Australian jangle of ‘I Wanna Live’. An impressive debut!
