VIDEO PREMIERE: Mark Moldre – I Saw You Last Night

Taken from Mark Moldre‘s exceptional 2023 LP Nambucca Fables, I’m very pleased to exclusively premiere the video clip for ‘I Saw You Last Night‘, a highly personal song set amid the grief and process of dealing with the death of a parent, in this case Mark’s mother.

The video clip, rendered in black and white and created by Mark, beautifully and movingly captures the themes of loss, apparition, disconnection and feeling untethered and emotionally adrift.

Mark gives a poetic insight into the song and the inspiration behind it:

I Saw You Last Night was inspired by an amalgamation of few things.
Thinking that I saw Mum standing out the front of our house a few months after we lost her.
I actually said to my wife “Oh, look, Mum’s here”.
A reflex comment.
Words that came out before memory kicked in.
I’d heard of that happening to people previously but always thought it sounded made up.
It happens.
Secondly
Mum had left behind a series of childhood memories on four pieces of paper.
I discovered the pages in a dresser drawer a couple of weeks after she was gone.
Her memories were written out like bullet points
and one of them was remembering when the streetlights were first installed
in her street at Nambucca Heads in 1958
and how all the kids would congregate underneath in the evenings.
That imagining became the opening few lines.
I can see the word picture clearly in my mind.
Verse two is a dream revisited.
The bridge and third verse was my attempt at explaining the feeling of being stuck,
grounded and frozen in my tracks.
No wind in my sails.
Singing the song today still hits me like a huge weight.
