Fallow Fields (Dandenong Ranges, Victoria) continue their run of great singles with the melodic, quick-stepping ‘Lil Honey‘, in anticipation of their debut album Rocky Head Road (Aug 26th). Out across streaming services on Monday August 26th, I’m very pleased to be able to premiere the song’s video clip here on PTW today.
Creating an original video clip is always a challenge for artists and Rachel and Danna Simmons have come up with a gem on the new single, drawing on the talents of an emerging auteur film director – their eight year old son Charlie! The charming video finds them at the mercy of liquid honey, a rocking horse, zip line and roller skates as Charlie flexes his directorial muscles.
The song has the perfect balance of twang-rich guitar leads, rapid fire acoustic strumming, a head nodding rhythm section and twin vocals that marry Danna’s mix of country sneer and high & lonesome falsetto with Rachel’s sweeter background harmonies.
As they explain, the song “captures the conflicted feelings of any relationship. A reluctance to let go, a desire for things to improve, and a willingness to be there despite not always understanding or meeting their partner’s needs perfectly. An acknowledgment of shortcomings, and a plea for understanding. An attempt to try and convey genuine intentions and care.”
I’m impressed with the way the duo hit a pure country sweet-spot in their sound, without overloading it with either commercial tropes or strict old-timey adherence. They clearly seem to relish their musical creativity and interplay and aren’t afraid to have fun with it.
Head over to the band’s Bandcamp page to order the new album on vinyl!
