One of the great new bands that I came across in 2024 was Brown Horse who hail from Norfolk in the UK. Their debut Reservoir immediately impressed and from the sound of ‘Corduroy Couch‘, the first taste of their new 2025 album All The Right Weaknesses (April 4th), they’re set to follow up the debut in fine style!
As Americana UK say… “The aim was to build on the stark twang of their debut album Reservoir and all the signs are that this an energised Brown Horse; melding slacker-rock, folk, and alt-country – perhaps equal parts Lucinda Williams, Jason Molina, The Breeders, and Silver Jews with contributions from the band’s multiple songwriters, the record is a patchwork potentially far greater than the sum of its parts.”
‘Corduroy Couch’ is the first single from the album, songwriter Nyle Holihan comments “The song draws from a couple of sources, the most literal being my memory as a young teenager in the attic listening to worn out TalkingHeads and R.E.M. tapes on my parents’ big old beige sofa. Hopefully, some of the angular fuzziness of those albums carries through. I also took a lot of inspiration from the great short stories in Joy Williams’ ‘The Visiting Privilege’. She writes with amazing precision and communicates mood and atmosphere incredibly visually despite the sparseness of her prose. I tried to emulate a little of that in the verses.”
