LISTEN: Hawkshaw Hawkins ~ Rattlesnakin’ Daddy

HawkshawHawkins[1]

MI0002546288Lately I’ve been spending a lot of time trawling through an excellent compilation called Hillbilly Boogie that came out on the Proper Box Set label in 2002. It’s a 4CD set and includes well known artists like Tennessee Ernie Ford, Delmore Brothers, Hank Snow and Chet Atkins as well as a ton of lesser known names like the fabulously titled Cousin Deems Sanders & His Goatherders.

A track by Hawkshaw Hawkins led me to explore more of his music and a You Tube search delivered this great track Rattlesnakin’ Daddy. Hawkins was popular in the honky tonk and hillbilly from the 1950s into the early ’60s before his life was tragically cut short in the same plane crash that took the life of Patsy Cline and Cowboy Copas in 1963. He was married to Jean Shepard, a star in her own right and he had his biggest success with the single Lonesome 77203 which spent 24 weeks on the country singles chart, peaking at number one for 4 weeks shortly before he died.
