Starting with a lo-fi drum pattern Good Lovelies quickly arrive with their sweet intertwined harmonies to elevate the opening track into a quirky, sparkling pop-laced folk song. They’ve tried to mix things up on their new album, sonically and in their songwriting and at times it works very well. Too often though the curse of over-production sanitises their obvious country/folk collective singing ability and a certain tweeness takes over. When they avoid the airbrushing as they do on the sweet, aching lilt of ‘When The City Settles’ it feels exponentially more real and believable but those moments of beauty are far too infrequent.
