Lo Carmen is currently based in LA but she still gets back home to Sydney to visit and play music. One recent trip resulted in the recording of a brand new solo album (her 5th) called Everyone You Ever Knew (Is Coming Back To Haunt You) which will be released digitally on Chiquita Records early November. We’ll have a full review soon but on first listen it’s another mesmerising collection of songs bathed in shimmering melancholy. Carmen’s music, via that woozy, soulful, honeyed hush of a voice, is like a entering a dream state from a David Lynch film, dripping with sadcore noir and romantic drama.
Like Velvet Undergound jamming with Mazzy Star in a Nashville honky tonk after closing time.
The the self produced, self released album was recorded by Wade Keighran in Sydney, Australia earlier this year and features long term collaborators Sam Worrad (The Holy Soul) and Cec Condon (Mess Hall), along with the Cruel Sea bassist Ken Gormley. Carmen brings her ramshackle guitar feels as well as playing elegant vibraphone. Pedal steel virtuoso Jason Walker lends some psychedelic slide to the title track and the golden voiced Daniele Marando (The Maladies, Oh Willy Dear) provides backing vocals throughout.
The first single, with a video directed by husband Aden Young (Rectify) to be released shortly, is the haunting title track:
