This track reminded me of Robert Ellis when I first heard it. The Athens GA songwriter Tyler Key has a similar vocal tone that cuts through the sweet country stylings on this really great new single that balances rough swagger and nuanced playing.
As Key explains, “Most everyone I know in their mid-to-late twenties has gone through a period where they were strapped for cash but things were looking upward, and that’s really at the heart of this song. It’s a country-folk song, but more in the vein of John Prine or Jerry Jeff Walker–a little left of center and tough to pin down.”
Key has a bunch of releases on his Bandcamp page which are worth investigating. His previous single ‘How To Lose’ is another winner and it appears these two tracks will be on a forthcoming new LP called Wild Azaleas and Other Tall Tales.
