Melbourne-based NZ singer-songwriter Matt Joe Gow released his new single ‘Sweet Collapse‘ a few weeks ago and now we’re extremely pleased to be able to premiere the video for the song, directed by Regan Wood and filmed on the coast near Gow’s house.
‘Sweet Collapse’, the second single from the upcoming fourth album Between Tonight & Tomorrow, was written as a sequel to his show closer ‘Georgia Rose‘, from the Seven Years album, revisiting and continuing the song’s story of romantic salvation. As Gow has shown across three albums, he’s a consummate songwriter who has an innate ability to find and spotlight the core emotional elements in his songs.
On ‘Sweet Collapse’ the simplicity of the drums recall Stan Lynch (Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers), allowing the sublime, keening guitar line to sink its hooks into your heart and mind. It’s offset by warmly-strummed acoustic guitar and piano notes that dance in the background like the gently crashing waves of the video clip. Gow’s voice has never sounded better, that blend of gentle ache and melancholy that sits outside any one pigeonhole – part country, part folk-rock, part heartland and soulful indie rock. Collapse never sounded so sweet.
Gow (with Josie Laver) plays the final two dates of his Third Time Lucky Tour this weekend:
APRIL 29 – OCCASIONAL WINE BAR, Boorowa NSW
MAY 1 – GOLDEN BARLEY, Enmore NSW
