SINGLE PREMIERE: MFV – Twin Cowboy

MFV are a six-piece band hailing from the Wollongong area who first began as life-long friends jamming in various garages and halls south of Sydney in 2019. Some of the members also play in shoegaze band Miners (check out their self-titled 2021 album) and you can definitely hear the textural nuances and dynamics of that genre buried in the dark western patina of MFV.

Anything that takes country or folk music and breathes new life into it, exploring the contemporary possibilities of traditional styles, is an immediate drawcard for me and MFV caught my ear immediately when I was treated to a preview of their new single ‘Twin Cowboy‘, which I’m very pleased to be able to premiere online today.

The song possesses a dark and shadowy swing and sway. Guitars ringing out with a wonderful twang and jangle and the melancholic viola creating a cinematic and nostalgic soundscape. The rhythm section rolls and tumbles with melodic warmth while Josh Flint sings about environmental collapse and the loss of the last wild frontiers. It’s like Crazy Horse with a folk-rock sensibility, filtered through the Australian landscapes of open ocean, forests, mountains and grasslands.

‘The single ‘Twin Cowboy’ is the second released from their forthcoming new EP Buckshot Days (March 7th). The band’s debut EP End Times was released late in 2022.

MFV launch their new EP at La La Las in Wollongong on March 9th.
