South Queensland band Rusty Pickups have a new EP called Rattle In My Heart on the horizon and last week they released the title-track single ‘Canary’, under licence from Near Enough Records (Mt. Morning, Kyle Jenkins). It’s a gently anthemic song that showcases the desperation of lost love, and yet still builds to leave a bit of hope in the barrel – just enough to go round and do it all again.
The sparseness of the country/folk instrumentation, shaped around Michael Cook’s acoustic guitar and Ayden Robert’s double bass, Lee Fielding’s clawhammer banjo and the meandering keys of Waylon Katz, allows the vocal to stand out quite wonderfully, a tender and impassioned clarion call to the brokenhearted.
I’m mightily pleased to be able to premiere the video clip, which cleverly mixes old cartoons with band footage.
