One of my favourite Australian folk/country artists, Watty Thompson, has announced premiere screenings of Watty Thompson Live at Estonian House – The Film, captured in Naarm, Melbourne on the release of his acclaimed debut album in March of 2023. Screenings kick off this week with tonight in Lorne VIC followed by Thursday in Sydney and Friday in Thornbury VIC. Full details below.
During the making of his debut album, Aussie bush balladeer Watty Thompson had a dream. It was to bring country heart to the big city, a manifestation of the care and intent of his new musical project in the form of a community celebration, a musical event like no other.
Along with his talented friends in the Total Fire Band, a host of incredible like-minded musicians, the historic Estonian House (formally Western Theatre) in West Brunswick, Victoria was transformed into the Australian bush utopia that resounds throughout Thompson’s musical works. A gathering of close friends, both old and new came together under gathered gum branches to commune with the loving spirit of this old-time music done in a completely new way.
Produced by Wild Rose Pictures, Watty Thompson Live at Estonian House – The Film is a document of a halcyon moment for Watty Thompson and his Total Fire band as they bring to life the songs on an album that made so much impact on its release.
The songs are stirring, the energy is palpable, as a young man and his long-held vision that music has the power to change us all for the better plays out in an incredibly live performance full of love, joy and indeed at times deep felt sorrow.
With Graham (played by alt Country star Andy Golledge) along for the ride, watch an edifying moment in Australian music that will warm the heart and affirm the soul.
