PRESS RELEASE:
Crowell is a multi-Grammy-award winner whose songs have been recorded by Johnny Cash, Norah Jones, Etta James and Grateful Dead among others. His 1988 breakthrough Diamonds and Dirt, generated five #1 singles and a Grammy Award for the song “After All This Time.” His critically acclaimed works The Houston Kid, Fate’s Right Hand, The Outsider and Sex and Gasoline were followed by the 2010 release of his memoir, Chinaberry Sidewalks. In 2012, Crowell released KIN: Songs By Mary Karr and Rodney Crowell. The album made its debut at #1 on the Americana and Country Rock album chart and spent 3 weeks at #1 on the Americana album chart. His honors also include an ASCAP Lifetime Achievement Award and membership of the Songwriters Hall of Fame.
Emmylou Harris and Rodney Crowell came together in 2012 to record what was to become their Grammy Award winning album Old Yellow Moon. The album was released in 2013 to critical acclaim with NPR Music calling it, “a classic in every sense of musical accomplishment.” Having met nearly 40 years before the release of this album, in 1974, the two started working together almost instantly, by recording the Crowell-penned “Bluebird Wine”. The song became the opening number for Harris’s 1975 Pieces of the Sky album and was re-recorded for Old Yellow Moon with slightly altered lyrics and, for a change, Rodney Crowell singing lead.
During 1975, Crowell became part of Harris’ backing band “The Hot Band”. As such he toured with her and is featured as musician on most of her 1970s and 1980s albums. In addition, Emmylou Harris has recorded roughly 20 Crowell-composed songs over the years, such as “I Ain’t Living Long Like This”, “Leaving Louisiana in the Broad Daylight” and “Till I Gain Control Again”. Emmylou returned the favor and can be heard prominently as backing vocalist and musician on Crowell’s debut LP Ain’t Living Long Like This, released in 1978. The duo are currently working on the follow up to Old Yellow Moon, the as yet untitled album will be released sometime in 2015.
