Last night I had the opportunity to see Aldous Harding perform at the Vanguard in Sydney as part of her current Australian run of shows. Incredible gig. She has this ability to be fragile, hilarious, anxious and self-effacing between songs and then slip effortlessly into the hypnotic, droning and melodically adventurous singer and guitarist. Bent over a nylon-stringed guitar, cooing wordless phrases and soaring into otherworldly spaces Harding is a unique musician who draws from dark cabaret as much as she does English folk and contemporary freak-folk. Harding played songs from her acclaimed debut and a brace of songs intended for her next album which I believe she said will be called Party, before treating us to covers of Toto’s ‘Africa’, Roy Orbison’s ‘Crying’, Kate Bush’s ‘Wuthering Heights’ and an emotionally rich Edith Piaf song. Heady, spooky and stirring stuff all round.
A big thank you to everyone who came out last Sunday to the opening night of Heartbreaker Sessions at Freda’s, the new fortnightly alt.country, folk, blues night curated by myself (Chris Familton, PTW Editor) and Darren Cross (Jep and Dep). The turnout and vibe was just as we’d hoped with great performances by Caitlin Harnett and Brielle Davis. For the next session on August 23rd we have two fine gentlemen in Andy Golledge and Kris Morris playing plus the usual food, drink and DJ shenanigans.
This weekend around Sydney you can catch Sam Shinazzi, Adam Young and Jenny Queen at Proper Music Social at the Union Hotel in Newtown while the big announcement of the week was the return of Lucinda Williams to Australia for some headline shows and appearances at Day On The Green events with Paul Kelly, Kasey Chambers and Marlon Williams in December.
Also coming up at the end of the month on Aug 30th is a gig at the Petersham Bowling Club as part of the Oxjam Festival 2015. The local Americana community will be banding together to help raise money for Oxfam in their efforts to reduce global poverty. PTW helped out putting the lineup together and we’ll also be there spinning tunes between sets as the PTW Jukebox. Appearing are Cruisin’ Deuces, Katie Brianna, Mark Lucas, Bree De Rome, Brian Manning. Great cause, get behind it!
We’ve got a couple of new album reviews up on the blog. The excellent new record from Lindi Ortega and Shane Nicholson‘s much anticipated new album. Love to know your thoughts on those releases if you’ve heard them and any other recent albums that you’re loving.
This week’s classic clip comes from Dwight Yoakam‘s 1986 LP Guitars, Cadillacs, Etc., Etc..
