Melbournian Emilee South is back with a brand new single ‘Howl’, the first taste of her forthcoming 2nd EP. It’s out digitally on Oct 14th and available on 7″ vinyl from Oct 30th but we’re lucky enough to sneak in a day early with a premiere of the song on PTW.
Recorded live over two days at The Aviary Recording Studio, the EP features Matt Dixon on Baritone Guitar, Josh Barber on Drums and Ben Franz on Double Bass. With a slew of special guest vocalists, such as Al Parkinson, Broads, William Lee, Oskar Herbig, Ben Woolley and Skyscraper Stan, the songs lay comfortably on a bed of velvet backing vocals.
‘Howl’ is a much darker sound for South, a little dirtier and a lot more rock’ n’ roll than her debut. Guitars slink and growl over a prowling rhythm section, controlled menace the order of the day. With a voice finely balanced between sultry, coy and swingin’ powerhouse, South is a stylistic equivalent to the likes of Tami Neilson and Lindi Ortega, drawing equally on soul, rock ‘n’ roll, blues and country.
To celebrate the new single South is putting on a Halloween Party on Sunday Oct 30th at The Bella Union with her full band and support from Skyscraper Stan plus DJs and prizes for the best costumes…. TICKETS
