Greg Farley used to be a member of The Felice Brothers but since his departure he’s slowly but surely carved out an impressive and promising solo career. In 2018 he released his album Taker Easy, featuring the excellent track ‘Make It Out’. His new album Brown Bag was released last month and one of its many highlights is the single, ‘Dodge Ram’.
The song is one of those perfect snapshot songs – a time, a place and an incident of the kind that shapes childhood memories and experiences.
“Daddy smacked up that Dodge Ram
coming home from the bar again
me and my sister waiting by the window
all night”
The rest of the album covers a number of bases with sparse folk leaning into ragged and rootsy electric alt-country. The common factor across the ten songs is his lyrical vignettes, richly imbued with Farley’s stories and poetry, delivered through his earthy and gritty voice that adds the perfect shape and grain to the songs. You can hear The Band, Felice Bros and Dylan in Farley’s organic and sublimely heartfelt sound.
