Country music has always excelled at capturing the pain and loneliness of heartache and doomed and failed romance. Here at PTW we co-curate a monthly live gig called Heartbreaker Sessions and we thought we’d ask some of the artists appearing to choose a few of their favourite songs that capture that feeling.
First up we’ve got Josie Rothwell from Sydney duo Peasant Moon who are appearing this Sunday at Heartbreaker Sessions at The Bearded Tit in Redfern, Sydney.
Jessi Colter – You Mean To Say
The Wanted! compilation was one of the albums in my parent’s collection that got me started on country music. How amazing is Jessi’s sultry voice and her heavy eyelashes – my first girl crush.
Blitzen Trapper – Not Your Lover
This song is perfect and tragic and anytime someone sings about moon-walking cowboys I am hooked. This video is from their 2009 Metro Theatre show, which is the first time I saw them live and you can probably hear my mind exploding in the background.
Jenny Lewis – Godspeed
This song makes me cry every time I hear it.
