This Sunday afternoon at The Bearded Tit in Redfern, Sydney you can catch the latest instalment of Heartbreaker Sessions, curated by myself and Darren Cross (Jep and Dep). Darren is off freaking out French minds and ears in Paris so I’ll be on the decks spinning alt, cosmic and classic country tunes with a healthy dash of folk, blues and rock n roll.
Most importantly, Skyscraper Stan and Lisa Caruso will be playing live sets for your listening and drinking pleasure. Stan, the Kiwi troubadour, now based in Melbourne but seemingly always on the move singing his songs and challenging mic stands, both solo and with his band The Commission Flats. He’s an exceptional talent both as a songwriter and performer, fusing dark satire, wicked humour and heartache in his folk and country sound.
Lisa Caruso a Sydney singer/songwriter who has been slowly but surely building a strong reputation for her soulful songs that recall everyone from Martha Wainwright to Mazzy Star, Cat Power to Anna Calvi via the worlds of indie, blues, folk and dreamy noir-pop.
We asked both of them to choose three songs that came to mind when they think of ‘heartbreakers’. First up, Stan selected tracks from Loudon Wainwright – which he describes as ‘ruinous‘, Tom Waits and Louis Armstrong while Lisa went with Llorando covering ‘Crying’, of which she says, “really, it’s all you need. Right in the guts!”, Wendy Rene and Camera Obscura’s ‘James’.
