Sydney artists Fleur Wiber and Chris Carrapetta have come together to record an album’s worth of their favourite alt-country covers during lockdown and the first superb track they’ve released from it is is a version of Rowland Salley‘s ‘Killing the Blues’. Salley is the bassist for Chris Isaak and his best known song has been previously covered by John Prine, Shawn Colvin, Robert Plant and Alison Krauss, and most recently Shooter Jennings.
Wilber and Carrapetta’s version is a wonderful blend of the pair’s voices, the latter often taking the high harmony and nailing that lonesome, wistful country sound. They also know the power of sitting back and letting their guitars take the lead between verses. Simple but perfectly weighted and placed.
