You know those songs that sound like they could just keep going and going, on an infinite one way street? ‘Imaginary Ships‘, the brand new single from Van Walker & The Ferriters, is one such song, built on a locked-in rhythm section, the guitars and mandolin adding a lilting folk-rock feel while the accordion creates a gorgeous melancholic mood, not dissimilar to some of R.E.M’s more laidback, countrified moments. Out front, Walker leads the way with his earthy, lived-in voice – the perfect companion to the music that rolls on and on beautifully. In their own words the single is an epic singalong regarding the phenomenon of the invisibility of things beyond our understanding and the eventual thawing of even the coldest emotional season.
‘Imaginary Ships’ is taken from their forthcoming album Greetings From Newtown Geelong, due out in July.
Van Walker will be familiar to many from his many bands including Swedish Magazines, Heartbreakers, The Livingstone Daisies and his solo releases, including his excellent 2020 album Ghosting. For the new album he joined forces with The Ferriters, a band who’ve proved popular with their mix of Australian and Irish folk/rebel music. The band comprise of Seamus Hoare on bass and harmonica, Maree Dertien on accordion, Greg Field on Fiddle & Mandolin, Dan Musil on dobro, and Michael Barclay on drums and vocals.
